3 Tips for Choosing Natural Soaps (+History)

The soap is the simplest way to maintain good hygiene, right? In fact, soaps have a very long history. The idea of ‘natural soaps’ has begun back in antiquity. The Ancient Greeks, for example, have used different juices in order to clean their bodies. Other nations have used soaps also for doing the laundry and to treat some medical conditions!

Some of the first soaps produced in Europe have been made with olive oil, salt and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Do you wonder why olive oil? It is said to soothe and moisturize the skin and it’s also considered hypoallergenic and perfectly biodegradable! Ok, back to history! Later came the idea to put different essential oils (like lavender, calendula, etc.) for cosmetic and healing purposes. Today soaps have turned into a source of relaxation, better tonus, good-looking skin and others.

Of course there are thousands of soap recipes, all of which contain different ingredients. So, here’s some information that might help you choose the best soap:

  1. A soap that contains glycerin is believed to be one of the purest soaps as studies show that this natural compound makes the skin soft, beautiful and damp.
  2. In case you have a very sensitive skin, it’s advisory for you to avoid the conventional soaps as they have a lot of chemicals, aromaizers, SLS and emulsifiers. That’s why it’s better to use natural soaps, which might be more expensive, but of high quality!
  3. Some of the most common ingredients in the organic soaps are the essential oils because they not only add flavor, but they also have a lot of healthy properties. Here’s a tip: the essential oils derive only from plants, not from fruits (except for citrus fruits), so make sure you buy soaps only with plant essential oils!
